Cement lorry kills student, injures four in Ibadan

A driver lost control of his lorry on Friday
afternoon at Eleyele area of Ibadan, Oyo
State, killing a student on the spot.
The lorry, which was loaded with cement,
also collided with a commercial bus,
injuring four others. The deceased
student, who was identified as Rashidat
Akinola, attended the Federal Cooperative
College, Ibadan.
Eyewitnesses said the lorry, with number
plate XA178BDG, was coming from the
Dugbe end of the road and going towards
Ologuneru area when it crushed the
young woman. The other four victims that
sustained various degrees of injuries were
occupants of an 18-seater bus, which was
also involved in the accident.
The Police Public Relations Officer in the
state, Olabisi Ilobanafor, told our
correspondent that the driver was Lateef
Okunola from Ipokia area of Ogun State.
She said, “He lost control of the vehicle at
Eleyele roundabout and killed Rashidat
Akinola on the spot.”
The injured persons were taken to the
hospital by the Oyo State Mobile
Ambulance Service.
A resident in the area told our
correspondent that the driver and his
assistant attempted to flee the scene of
the accident but were prevented by
eyewitnesses.
“After killing the woman, the driver and
his friend tried to run away but they were
apprehended by the people around. The
driver looked to be about 20 years of age.
He appeared to be too young to drive
such a big vehicle,” she said.
