The Tin Can Island Port Command of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has
recorded N151billion revenue and a seizure profile of 159 containers.
The revenue, which was recorded between January and August this year, is N23.6
billion more than the figure recorded during the same period last year.
Area Controller, Mr. Jibrin Bakare, said in Lagos that with the record, the Command
has performed creditably in all spheres of statutory responsibility. Zakare disclosed
that following frantic efforts to check import crime, the Command recorded 159
seizures of various trade goods in the port.
According to him, the breakdown of the seized items includes 92 40ft containers,
47 20ft containers, three unpacked vehicles and 17 other items. The Duty Paid
Value of the items, he said, was N481.3million.
The Area Controller also identified the items seized as tissue papers, furniture,
soaps, vegetable oil, soft drinks, used cloths, generators and used tyres. Others
include lace materials, television stand, automotive batteries, mosquito coil, expired
frozen fish, used shoes, glass, television sets, printed wax, cartons of whiskey, bales
of second hand clothing, bags of basmati, rice, among others.
He disclosed that eight persons have been arrested by the Customs Command in
respect of the seized items, adding that they will soon be charged to court.
Zakare called on importers and freight forwarders to shun import crime or be
prepared to face the wrath of the customs. He said he was committed to ensuring
an efficient port system, assuring that importers who do not have issues on their
goods will enjoy express treatment when clearing their goods at the port.
